Following the of acquisition of Solectron by Flextronics in 2007, Mr. Miller began his consultancy with the mission of helping OEMs, ODMs, and 3rd Party Service Providers to re-engineer reverse supply chains, perform outsourcing initiatives, competitive analysis and value innovation projects.
At Solectron, Mr. Miller held the position of Vice President of Business Development in the Global Services organization. He joined Solectron in 2003 with the assignment to identify and take strategic business from competitors. In this period he was successful in dislodging business from 4 out of the top 8 targets within a 12-month period, helping to create reference cases for significant growth. Mr. Miller was asked to expand his role to lead the America’s Business Development and Account Management team, which included global relationships with key OEMs, such as Apple, Bosch, Brocade, Echostar, Lexmark, Network Appliance, Palm, Seagate, Sony, Sprint, Sun, Verifone, Western Digital, and others. He was also assigned to develop new customers for the Retail Technical Services business, an on site, customer facing technical support model that had an established base of over 200M in sales. He was successful in creating a 500M pipeline by the time of the change of ownership to Flextronics. In addition, Miller was leading the business development activities for the Medical segment.
Prior to joining Solectron, Miller held the position of VP of Sales for Teleplan, the largest independent provider of post manufacturing repair services. Miller joined Teleplan in 2003 assuming responsibility for computing segment customers, including Apple, Gateway, Hitachi, Maxtor and Western Digital. Miller’s responsibilities included leadership of the company’s data storage steering committee and the development of the companies LCD panel repair market. During his term with Teleplan Miller led a mission to expand the company’s business through alliances with ODMs. Miller was successful in initiating engagements with Quanta, Liteon, Viewsonic and Compal, qualifications with AUO, CMO, CPT, Innolux and QDI and collaborating to better service parts agreements with Quanta, LGE, Samsung, Wistron and Foxconn.
In 2001 Mr. Miller became VP and General Manager at Magnetic Data, a leading independent provider of post manufacturing services. At MDT, Miller was a member of the executive staff with responsibilities including global program management, the company’s remarketing division (MDT brand), and management of the flagship facilities at its headquarters in Southern California. Miller’s contributions during his term at MDT included establishment of a web based portal for both internal and external monitoring of key program metrics, turn around specialist for unprofitable programs and sites, and development of a multi-tiered customer satisfaction survey and reporting methodology. Miller had full P&L responsibility for a site with 500 associates. MDT was acquired by Solectron in 2002.
Prior to joining MDT, Mr. Miller spent 27 years in the data storage industry. At Maxtor, starting in 1996, Miller first served as Director of Strategic Commodities, leading various
supply chain re-engineering initiatives. He was responsibility for the outsourcing of critical subassemblies as well as managing a network of component suppliers throughout Asia. He later assumed leadership positions on core teams responsible for womb to tomb development of new generations of hard disk drive. While at Maxtor he led initiatives to reduce its development cost and time to market by applying Fast Cycle TimeTM and Design Of Experiment methodologies. He also pioneered a web based phase gate system to better execute complex NPI and time to volume targets.
Miller worked at Seagate from 1989 to 1996. He was first Program Manager at the (Imprimis) skunk works operation that developed the first enterprise class 3.5” hard disk drives. In 1990 he assumed responsibility for Seagate’s Program Management and Industrial Engineering functions in Asia based at its regional headquarters in Singapore. He was in charge of NPI including transition and ramp of new products, the supporting resources, supply chain and customer qualifications. During this period in addition to on going responsibilities, Miller led the recovery following a disastrous fire in one of Seagate’s clean room facilities. His record in orchestrating the return to operations was recognized by the company’s business interruption insurance provider as one of the fastest and lowest cost recoveries of its kind. In 1993 Miller repatriated to Seagate’s headquarters in California where he first led the NPI organization and later the entire Program Management function.
Before joining Seagate, Miller held director level positions at Information Magnetics, a pioneer and leading supplier of magnetic recording heads for data storage. He joined Information Magnetics as a start up company and stayed with the company through various phases of expansion, consolidation and ultimately vertical integration. He held positions in account management, materials and operations building critical experience in high tech general management.
Miller attended the University of California at Santa Barbara for undergraduate general education. He obtained a BA in business administration with a marketing emphasis from Columbia Pacific University in 1989. He values continuing education. He has attended seminars in Cal Tech’s engineering management program and at Cal Poly University. He is a certified practitioner in leading Blue Ocean Strategy initiatives. He is a member of the Blue Ocean Strategy certified affiliated consultants group.
Miller lives on the central coast of California with his wife Mary. He has a son and daughter who have successful careers and most recently he has become a proud grand parent. Mary, who herself had a successful management career at Seagate, runs the family’s Starboard House property development and management portfolio. Miller loves the outdoors, spends his non-working time on his favorite hobbies, wine, art and music.
